I paid $45 for a used paperback of A Little Life and I want my money and my weekend back
Everyone in my book club in Portland kept pushing this one, so I grabbed a used copy at Powell's for $45 and started it on a Friday night. I got to page 200 and felt sick to my stomach, not in a good way, just flat out manipulated. I finished it anyway because I hate quitting, and honestly I think the author just piles on suffering to see how much a reader will sit through. There is a difference between a book that breaks you open and a book that just breaks you down, and this one is the second kind. I cried at the end but not because it was beautiful, more because I was mad I gave it three days of my life. Has anyone else walked away from a so called tearjerker feeling tricked instead of moved?
