I want to be fair here because I know how much people in this group love Susanna Clarke. But I finally caved 3 weeks ago after the 40th post about how this one rearranged someone's whole brain, and I have to say I do not get it. I made it 180 pages in, waiting for that gut punch moment everyone talks about, and all I got was a guy wandering a big flooded house writing stuff in a journal. The part that bugs me most is I read the first 60 pages at a coffee shop in Boise on a Saturday and a woman at the next table saw the cover and did the whole oh my god wait till you get to the end face. So I pushed through another 120 pages off pure peer pressure. That was 3 weeks of reading time I could have spent on a stack of 4 other books sitting on my nightstand. I am not saying the people who love it are wrong, I am saying my $18 and my evenings are gone and I feel like the odd one out here. Did the ending actually land for you, or did you feel the same heaviness I did getting through it?
