Rant: my first attempt at a leather spine hinge failed miserably after 6 months of daily use

Bound a personal journal with a leather spine hinge back in January. Looked clean and tight at first. By July the hinge split right along the crease. Cheap veg tan leather from a hobby store was the problem. Should have used proper bookbinding leather with more flexibility. What weight leather do you all use for spine hinges that actually holds up?

Did you skive the leather down at the hinge point before gluing?

Wait, are we supposed to be doing actual preparation now? I thought it was just glue and hope, like my last attempt at fixing a belt!
