I was gluing endpapers wrong for years and didn't know it

For about five years, I just slapped paste on the whole paper and pressed it down. Then I saw a binder in Chicago work, and she only glued a thin strip along the spine edge. She said, 'You're making the paper swell and buckle, that's why your boards never sit flat.' I tried her way on my next three books, and the difference was huge. The covers closed perfectly. How did I miss this basic step for so long?

Thin strip" is key, not just the spine edge.

Totally get that feeling of missing a simple trick. Reminds me of when I first tried to sew a quilt. I was cutting all my fabric squares with scissors, and they were always a little off. My neighbor saw me struggling and just handed me a rotary cutter. Changed everything overnight. Sometimes you just don't know the tool or the method exists until you see it done right.
