Appreciation post: the library sale volunteer in Cincinnati who wouldn't let me pay $2 for a water-damaged paperback
I went to a Friends of the Library sale in Cincinnati last Saturday and found a beat-up copy of a John le Carre novel I'd been hunting for months, and the volunteer at the table looked at the water stain on the cover and said "that one's too rough, just take it." I tried to stuff two bucks in the donation jar anyway because honestly the stain doesn't bother me, but she closed my hand around the bill and pointed me toward a cart of nicer paperbacks around the corner. She ended up pulling out three other spy novels she thought I'd like and stacked them on top of my pile without charging me for any of them. I've been to a lot of sales where people guard every quarter, so it was just a nice reminder that some folks do this because they actually love the books. Has anyone else had a sale volunteer basically adopt them for an afternoon like that?
