PSA: I tried a new way to run our book club vote and it backfired hard

Our group in Austin was picking our next book, so I suggested we all rank our top five choices instead of just voting for one. I thought it would make everyone happier, but it just made the whole thing take an hour and we ended up with a book nobody really loved. The lesson was that too many choices can kill the fun. Has your club found a good way to pick books that doesn't turn into a fight?

What if you just took turns picking?

Okay, but "took turns picking" only works if both people are fair. What if one person always picks the best thing for themselves on their turn? The other person just gets stuck with the leftovers every single time. That's not a real solution, it's just a way to make the unfairness seem orderly. You need some ground rules about what "fair" even means first.
