PSA: A guy in my Thursday book club told me how he rates books, and now our whole group argues about it
At our meeting in the back room of Rossi's Deli two weeks ago, we were talking about whether a book needs a likable main character, and one member, Greg, said he scores every book out of 10 the moment he finishes it and never changes the score. He pulled out a little notebook right there and showed us 34 books with numbers next to them, and half the group said that was way too rigid while the other half said they do the same thing in their heads. Now we spend more time fighting about how to rate books than about the books themselves, and our next pick, a slow 600 page mystery, is already sitting at a 4 from Greg. Does your club have a rule for scoring books, or do you just talk it out?
