Our club in Omaha picked 'The Three Body Problem' and I thought it was just going to be boring science stuff.

I was ready for a tough read, but the way it mixed a murder mystery with wild physics ideas, like the sophons, totally hooked me. We spent our whole two hour meeting just talking about the ethics of the Trisolarans' plan. Has your group ever had a book that surprised you like that?

Are you kidding? That book was a total slog. The science parts felt like a textbook and the murder mystery was paper thin. The sophons are a cool idea but the characters were so flat I didn't care what happened to them. Our book club argued for ten minutes before we all agreed to drop it and read something else.

You missed the point, anthony_wells. The ideas are the characters.

Hold on, you all agreed to drop it? That's wild to me. My group had the exact opposite reaction, we couldn't stop talking about it. The whole Dark Forest concept alone kept us up for an extra hour after the meeting ended. The characters not being super deep felt like the point to me, like they were just chess pieces playing out these huge, terrifying ideas. Your mileage may vary completely though, maybe we just had the right crowd for it at the time.
