Our book club almost broke up over whether the dad in The Road was a good father, so we made one rule

We spent 3 meetings in a row fighting about the same 40 pages in The Road and half the group quit showing up by week 4. So last month I suggested a new thing: whoever picks the book writes down 3 questions ahead of time and we each get 2 minutes to answer before anyone can jump in. The first night we did it, a woman named Deb who barely talks said more in 10 minutes than she had in a whole year of meetings. Now our group of 9 has held steady for 5 straight picks and people actually finish the book. Has anyone else tried a time limit thing, or does it just make it feel like a meeting at work?
