I walked into a used bookstore in Portland and saw a shelf labeled 'Book Club Killers'
It was full of books our group argued over for weeks, like 'Infinite Jest' and 'The Goldfinch'. I used to think those were just bad picks, but seeing them all together made me realize they're actually the best ones for sparking real talk. What's a book that nearly broke your club?

We had a whole meeting derailed by "The Overstory." Half the group was ready to chain themselves to a redwood, the other half kept checking their watches waiting for a plot to start. It was two hours of people just saying "trees" at each other with increasing frustration. Great book, terrible for group peace.

Honestly I used to think those books were just a chore. Seeing them all together like that makes me want to give them another shot.
