Told my foreman his fit-up gaps were too tight on that drum job last month
He said I was burning through rod and wasting time, so I opened them up to 1/8 inch and the weld passed x-ray on the first try with way less filler - anyone else have a boss who made them loosen up their tolerances?

bettym89 nailed it, tighter gaps just mean you're welding twice for nothing. Sounds like your foreman learned the hard way that 1/8 inch saves his x-ray bill.
