Just realized my tube expander was rolling 2 sizes too small on a 3 inch boiler
Last Tuesday I was rolling tubes on a 3 inch boiler in Wichita and noticed the tube sheet holes looked bigger than usual. Turns out I had grabbed the wrong expander from the gang box and was rolling them 2 sizes too small, so every joint was loose. I caught it after about 12 tubes because I could hear a rattle when I tapped them with my hammer. Had to cut all 12 out and redo them with the right tool, which ate up 4 hours of my shift. Anyone else ever grab the wrong expander and not notice until the hydro test?
Yikes, been there buddy. I once grabbed a 5/8 expander for 3/4 tubes and rolled about 8 of them before my helper asked why they looked so weird. The worst part is I argued with him for like 10 minutes that they were fine. Had to cut every single one out and my foreman still brings it up at every safety meeting. At least you caught yours before the hydro, that would've been a real bad day.
