I finally stopped fighting my helper over the grinder and my weld time went from 4 hours to 3
Last Tuesday a kid about 22 named Marcus rotated onto my crew. First day he grabbed the 7 inch grinder on a tank seam and I told him to leave it, we use the 4.5 for fit up. He just looked at me and said the prep guy on his last job in Gary gave him a cutting wheel size chart taped inside his hood. I almost laughed, but then he showed me. Coarse on the 7 for the root cleanup, fine on the 4.5 for the finish, and he wasn't gouging the base metal anymore. We knocked out the seam in 3 hours instead of the 4 it usually takes me. Now I'm wondering how much of my "this is the right way" is just habit. Has anyone else had a helper or new hand teach you something you'd been doing the same way for 15 years?
