Showerthought: My local game store in Portland changed how I see board game nights

I was at a game night there about three months ago, and this guy brought his own custom foam core insert for a game we were playing. He spent 20 minutes setting it up before we even started, and it felt like a show. I used to think that stuff was cool, but now I think it can kill the fun of just sitting down to play. Has anyone else felt like the hobby part gets in the way of the game part sometimes?

Used to love that stuff, but now I see it just adds another step before the fun part.

Totally get that. It feels like the hobby got obsessed with the stuff around the game instead of the game itself. Like, the point is to play, not to have a three hour setup for a thirty minute match. It kills the mood when you just want to hang out and roll some dice. All that extra work just makes it harder for new people to join in too. Keep it simple so we can actually play.

Yeah, that's the worst. I've seen people bring their own painted miniatures to a casual game of Catan. We're just trying to play, not watch you unpack your art project. It turns a chill night into a weird performance. Sometimes you just want to open the box and deal the cards. All that extra stuff can feel like a barrier to actually playing.
