My brother kept saying Wingspan was just bird bingo and I finally gave in
So my brother picked up Wingspan about 8 months ago and he would not shut up about it. I kept telling him it looked like a pretty theme pasted onto a boring engine builder, and honestly I was kind of a jerk about it at our game nights in Lansing. He finally got me to sit down with it a couple weeks ago and I ate my words hard. The way the bird powers chain off each other in the different habitats is actually really satisfying, and I lost our first game by like 6 points because I ignored the grassland row completely. I still think the egg spam strategy is a little much, but I was wrong about the whole thing being shallow. We've played it 5 times since and I'm the one texting HIM to set up games now. Has anyone else had a game they wrote off for ages and then flipped on? And should I grab the European expansion or is it not worth it?
I did the EXACT same thing with Terraforming Mars for like two years, kept calling it spreadsheet solitaire and refused to try it. My buddy finally just set it up one night and didn't even ask me, and by the end I was hooked and bought my own copy that week. What worked for me was going in with an open mind and NOT reading the rulebook first, just letting someone who knew the game walk me through a few turns. Once the rules click the whole thing opens up and you see why people love it. For Wingspan, the European expansion is worth it if you're already playing a lot, it adds new birds and end of round goals without changing the base game much. If you're only 5 games in I'd wear out the base game first and then grab it.
