I finally tried playing Catan with my family instead of my usual game group.

Always played with my serious gamer friends. Tried it with my parents and sister last weekend. Explained the rules way simpler, focused on trading. They loved it, played for two hours straight. Anyone have other gateway games that work for non-geeks?

Wait, why do you need a "gateway" game? It's just a board game night, not some secret club initiation. Catan is fun because you can trade and talk, not because it's training for harder games. Maybe your family just liked hanging out, and any simple game would have worked.

That's awesome it went so well. What was the biggest surprise for you, like did your family pick up on a strategy you didn't expect? I mean, sometimes new players see the game totally different.
