Hot take: That new board game cafe in Austin is a mess waiting to happen
I checked out The Dice Den last Saturday and it was packed, which is great. But I noticed they only have one small shelf of actual board games and the rest is just drinks and merch. Nobody was even playing anything, just scrolling on their phones. If you're scoping out a new spot for game night, walk through first and see if people are actually gaming or just hanging out. Has anyone else seen a place like this that just didn't get the point?

I see what you're saying about "nobody was even playing anything" but I think that first Saturday was probably just a fluke, you know? I swung by on a Tuesday evening and there were three different groups deep in board games, which was honestly a pleasant surprise after reading your take. Give it a little time for the buzz to settle and the regulars to find their rhythm, I bet it finds its footing.

Yeah I actually saw a post from the owner on Facebook talking about how weekday evenings are their busiest time because of local gaming groups that meet after work. Said theyre trying to build up the weekend crowd but its slow going since most people are out doing other stuff on Saturdays. Makes sense that a Tuesday would be more active than a Saturday afternoon, I guess the real test is if they can keep those weekday regulars coming back.
