Hot take: a single Meeple in my Catan box is worth more than my whole shelf of unopened games
So I was digging through my closet last week looking for my old Catan set from like 2009 and found one replacement wood meeple I bought at a game store in Chicago for $1.50. Out of curiosity I checked online and that tiny piece now sells for around $8 to $10 by itself because the older wood sets stopped being made. Meanwhile I've got three shrink-wrapped games I paid $40 each for sitting there, and they've lost value since day one. My buddy Dave laughed and said the little wooden guy is the only thing in my closet that went up in price. Makes me wonder if I should be hunting dusty old copies at thrift stores just to strip the pieces. Has anyone else noticed old components going for more than the games themselves?
Admit it, I used to roll my eyes at people who got excited about old game parts. I figured a meeple is a meeple, who cares if it's wood or plastic. Then I actually sold a beat up copy of an old game at a yard sale for way more than I paid, and the buyer told me he only wanted it for the pieces. That kind of changed my mind on the whole thing. Now I can't walk past a thrift store shelf without flipping the boxes over to check what's rattling around inside.
