Finally taught my group to play a 4 hour game in one night
Last month I tried to run a heavier euro game with my usual gaming crew and it flopped hard, nobody wanted to commit. But last Saturday I started with a 20 minute teach using reference cards and split the rules into phases, and we actually finished a 3.5 hour session with zero arguments. Has anyone else found a better way to introduce long games without scaring off casual players?
The reference card trick is the real MVP for me. I did the same thing with Terraforming Mars last year, printed out player aids for each phase and color coded them. We still had to pause a couple times to look stuff up, but nobody checked their phone or started side conversations. Also, I stopped trying to explain every tiny rule up front and just said "we'll learn the rest as we go" which took so much pressure off everyone.
