Finally admitted I was wrong about co-op games after a brutal 4 hour session

I always thought cooperative board games were boring because there's no winner. Then my friend Dave brought over Spirit Island last Friday and we spent 4 hours just trying to stop the invaders from overrunning the island. We lost twice before we finally squeaked out a win on our third try. The tension of everyone working together against the clock actually felt way more satisfying than beating each other. Has anyone else had a similar change of heart about a whole genre?

Same thing happened to me with Pandemic. Told my friends it was just cooperative Yahtzee and then spent 3 hours losing to a virus and looking like an idiot.

Honestly my friend Dave did the exact same thing. He was like "it's basically Yahtzee with cards" and got everyone hyped for a chill night. Then we spent like two hours getting wiped out by the same outbreak in Madrid every single round. He kept saying "next time we'll just stack the deck" but we never played that game again tbh.
