Vent: I picked a tripod over faster shutter speed for my niece's birthday party pics and most came out worse
Last Saturday at my sister's place in Mesa I shot my niece's 7th birthday with two setups: my old tripod locked down at 1/60 and a handheld batch at 1/500 with the ISO cranked. Everyone online swears by slow shutter plus support, so I ran that first and got 40 shots where kids turned into smears mid-blow of the candles. The handheld set was grainy as heck but 28 of 35 frames actually had faces you could make out. Now I'm wondering if the tripod advice is mostly for landscapes and not for kids who move like tiny tornadoes. What shutter speed do you all use indoors at a party when the light is bad?
