A guy at the Grand Rapids camera meetup spent 20 minutes showing me how to lock focus on a jogger, and it finally clicked
I went to a free camera meetup at a park in Grand Rapids last Saturday with about 15 people, mostly to practice panning on moving subjects. A retired photographer named Ron watched me miss a jogger three times in a row, then asked if he could take my camera for a second. He set it to continuous focus, put the focus point right on the runner's chest, and said "track the body, not the face, faces move too much." I tried it on the next six runners and got four sharp frames, which is way better than the zero I had before. Anyone else have a trick for panning shots that finally made it click for them?
Man, tracking the body instead of the face sounds like a shortcut that bites you later, because chest focus means the eyes go soft on a lot of those shots. A runner leaning into a turn or pumping their arms will throw that chest point off just as fast as a face moves, so you are just trading one problem for another. Face detect is sloppy right now but stick with it and learn to lead the shot, since sharp eyes are what actually makes a panning photo work.
