Update: I quenched a high-carbon blade in used motor oil instead of new

Everyone said it would ruin the temper, but the piece came out with less warping and a decent edge. What's the weirdest quenching medium you've had success with?

Quoting "less warping" - yeah, sometimes the weird stuff just works. I've used old hydraulic fluid in a pinch and it was fine.

Tried quenching a knife in leftover bacon grease once. It smelled amazing but the edge was about as tough as a strip of well-done bacon. I'll stick to less tasty options.

Honestly, that sounds like a great way to ruin a good blade.
