Serious question, coal forge vs propane for a beginner in a small garage?
Honestly I started on a cheap propane forge in my one car garage in Dayton and got decent heat in about 10 minutes with way less smoke and mess. Last month I finally built a small coal forge out of a brake drum and firebrick, and the heat is hotter and I can weld with it, but the smoke and clinker cleanup almost got me kicked out of the house. Tbh the propane let me practice hammer control without babysitting the fire every 30 seconds. Which did you all learn on, and would you put a new guy on coal or gas first?
Did your wife threaten to make you sleep in the garage with the coal smoke, or did the neighbors beat her to it? Starting on gas is the smart move since you get to learn hammering instead of playing firefighter every five minutes.
