Old timer said use a ball peen on my drift, I wish I listened sooner
Been making bottle openers for a few months now, and I kept fighting with a crappy flat drift I made from rebar. An old guy at the local hammer-in told me to grind the end into a ball peen shape so it wouldn't mushroom the top of the slot. I shrugged it off because I figured round would just slip around. Last week I finally tried it on a piece of 1/4 inch stock and the punch seated perfect on the first hit, no more re-grinding every 20 minutes. Has anyone else switched to a domed drift for slotted work, or do you all just stick with flat and deal with the distortion?
