Just realized the old smith down the road was right about my anvil stand
I was complaining to a guy named Earl at the spring hammer-in in Shipshewana about my anvil walking across the floor on heavy blows. He asked how I bolted it down and I said I didn't, just set it on a stump and figured weight would hold it. He told me to strap it with two chains and drop a bed of sand under the stump, and I sort of waved it off for a month. Finally tried it last Tuesday with 40 pounds of sand and the ringing dropped so much I could work without ringing ears. Wish I had listened sooner, my elbows hurt less too. What are you all using under your stumps, sand, rubber mat, or something else?
The part about the ringing dropping so much you could work without ringing ears is what gets me. How much sand are we talking, is the 40 pounds sitting in a box you built around the stump base or did you just pile it loose on the floor? I tried a rubber mat once and it did almost nothing, so I am curious if the sand has to be packed tight against the wood to really kill the sound.
