Warning: That paperback I bought at a yard sale in Tucson was missing its last 40 pages and the real ending is way worse
I grabbed a beat up copy of a thriller at a yard sale on 4th Ave for 50 cents and it ended mid sentence with the detective just walking away. I found the real final chapter online and the villain turns out to be a talking dog who was dead the whole time. Has anyone else picked up a used book with pages torn out and lost their mind over it?
Oh man, that beats anything I've ever found! I read a whole blog once about this book club that kept getting library copies with whole chapters razored out, and one lady said her mystery novel was missing the part where they solved the crime, so she spent a week thinking the butler did it based on nothing but vibes (she was wrong, it was the twin sister, of course). My own worst one was a Stephen King paperback from a thrift store where someone had torn out the last page because I guess they hated the ending that much. It drives me nuts because you never know if the missing pages are an accident or some kind of statement from the last owner. Honestly 50 cents is still a steal even with a talking dead dog ruining everything. If that author was gonna pull a dead dog villain, maybe the pages got torn out as a public service.
