The epilogue that rewrites the whole plot, brilliant or a cop out?

I keep seeing people defend epilogues like the one in Stephen King's 'The Stand' where it jumps decades ahead and explains everything, but to me that kills the mystery. On the other hand, a book like 'Life of Pi' leaves things ambiguous and some readers hate that too. Is a weird ending better when it gives you closure or when it leaves you guessing? Ive been arguing about this since 2019 at a bookstore in Austin, and I want to know where you all land on this.
