Update: I used to think my kid's adoptive parents would forget about me after the first year.
I ran into my son's adoptive mom, Sarah, at the grocery store in Springfield last month. We were both in the cereal aisle. She stopped me and said, 'Hey, I was just about to text you. We're putting together a photo album of his first five years, and we want a whole section with pictures and stories from you, if that's okay.' She said it so casually, like it was the most normal thing in the world. I just stood there holding a box of Cheerios, totally thrown. For five years I'd been steeling myself to fade into the background, thinking that was just how it worked. That one sentence in the middle of a Kroger changed my whole view of what an open adoption could actually be. Has anyone else had a moment where the other family did something small that meant a huge amount?

How often do we get it wrong about what other people want? You built a whole story in your head about fading away, and they were just over there planning to include you. That's the real deal right there.

Feel so happy for you, that's a really big deal. Those small, normal actions can change everything. Glad they see your part in his story.
