Two social workers, two totally different meetings, and why the second one left me able to get out of bed
I sat through my first meeting with a new social worker last Monday in Denver and it went about 15 minutes before I had to walk out to my car and just sit there. She kept saying she understood, but every question was about forms and dates, not about how I was doing three months after placement. Last week I met with a different one through a support group downtown and she asked me one thing first: what do you need today? That single question changed how the whole 45 minutes went. She let me talk about the grief in my own words, no checklist, no deadlines. With the first one I felt like a case number, with the second I felt like a person who was still a mom, just in a different way. If you are stuck with someone who makes you feel like paperwork, please ask your agency for a different worker, you are allowed to do that. Has anyone else had to switch workers to get one who actually listens?
