She said 'you write about her, not to her', and after 2 years of monthly updates I switched from third person reports to direct questions about her favorite TV shows and it completely changed how my daughter's birth mom responds.

That switch your aunt pointed out sounds so simple but it clearly hit different for both of you. Writing to someone instead of about them makes them feel like a real person in the story, not just a topic you're reporting on. Glad it opened things up after all that time, that had to feel huge.
