I finally stopped dodging the word "birth mother" after my daughter's 18th birthday dinner in Reno
For years I called myself her "first mom" because "birth mother" felt like a label someone else slapped on me, but sitting across from her at a diner on Virginia Street while she ordered coffee like a grown adult, I said it out loud and it didn't sting. My case worker back in 2006 told me the name would matter less than showing up, and she was right. Has anyone else made peace with a word they used to hate?
