I finally sat through a whole support group meeting in Boise, and one woman's 3 words stuck with me
I went to my first in person birth mother group at a church on Cole Rd in Boise about 6 weeks ago. I almost left in the parking lot twice. Halfway through, a woman across from me, maybe 60, said something I still repeat to myself. She said she placed her son in 1987 and for 30 years she kept a candle in the top of her closet because she didn't feel like she was allowed to grieve someone she chose to lose. What got me was how quiet she said it, like she was still checking if it was okay. I want to try going again next month but I'm wondering where other people here found their first group, and what helped you walk in the door the second time.
That line about the candle in the closet and not being allowed to grieve is the whole thing in a nutshell. For me the second time was easier because I walked in with one person's name in my head, the woman I'd talked to at the first meeting, and I just went and sat by her. Pick one person you clicked with and make the next visit about seeing them, not about surviving the whole room.
