Closed adoption vs open adoption with my daughter, one felt like a door slamming shut
When I placed my daughter in 2019 I picked a closed adoption in Ohio because I was 19 and scared, and all I got was a yearly photo through the agency. Last month her adoptive mom texted me a video of her riding a bike for the first time, and I sat on my kitchen floor and cried in a good way. Why did everyone tell me closed was the safer choice when open has given me more peace in 6 months than the last 5 years combined?
Went through almost the exact same thing with my son in 2017. I was 20 and everyone pushed closed on me too, told me it would be cleaner and easier to move on. Got a letter and one blurry photo a year and I spent every one of those years wondering if he was ok. His mom reached out two years ago and now I get texts and pictures and even got to see him at his birthday. It hurts sometimes but it is a good hurt, not the empty kind. That yearly photo thing is no way to live and nobody warns you about it. Glad you finally got some peace.
