Took me 4 hours to chase a creak that turned out to be my bottle cage bolt

Last Tuesday a customer dropped off a Trek Domane with a creak that only showed up when they pedaled hard, so I pulled the crank, greased the BB threads, and even swapped the pedals. After 4 hours of test rides around the block I finally squeezed the downtube bottle cage and heard the exact same noise from a loose M5 bolt. How do you all narrow down creaks without just tearing the whole bike apart?
