Cheap Park Tool chain checker beat my eyeball method on a customer's 11 speed
Honestly I used to just pull the chain off the ring and look at the gap, been doing it 12 years. Last month a guy rolls in with a Trek Domane and I swore the chain was fine, but the PT-CC-4 said 0.75 in about two seconds. Swapped it out and his skipping on the 14 tooth cog went away completely, saved him a cassette too. Anyone else keep a checker right on the bench so you stop guessing?
Kept one right on the bench for the last few years and it has saved me so many times. The eyeball trick works okay on older 8 and 9 speed stuff but once you get into 11 and 12 speed those tolerances are so tight that your eyes just lie to you. A worn chain chews up the cassette and chainrings way faster than people think, and on a Domane with a nice groupset that gets expensive quick. The 0.75 reading is the sweet spot for 11 speed, once you hit that you swap it and your cogs live to fight another day. Takes two seconds versus pulling the chain and guessing, no reason not to have one.
