Vent: My regular, a retired carpenter, asked why I never talk while I cut his hair

He said, 'You're the only person I see all week, and you just work in silence.' I've always focused on the cut being perfect, but maybe the chair is about more than that. How do you guys balance conversation with concentration on a complex fade?

That's a really good point he made. Do you think maybe you could ask him a simple question at the start, like about his week, and then just let him carry the chat while you focus on the tricky parts?

I mean, that sounds good in theory but it puts all the work on him. If you start with a simple question and then just zone out, he's gonna notice you're not really listening. It feels kind of fake, like you're just running a trick on him. Plus, what if his week was boring and he has nothing to say? Then you're both stuck in awkward silence anyway. You gotta actually be part of the chat, not just set a trap and walk away.
