Found out the average barber only keeps 5 out of every 10 new clients, and it hit a nerve
I was reading a survey from the Professional Beauty Association over my lunch break on Tuesday and it said the average shop loses about half of its first time clients after that first cut. I sat there with my sandwich going cold because I know my retention isn't that bad, but it's not great either. I started looking at my own numbers in the shop's booking system and out of the 40 new guys I saw in April, only 19 came back for a second cut. That's basically 48 percent and it stung. For the guys who've been doing this longer than my 4 years, what actually moved the needle on getting first timers back in the chair?

Check your math on that 40 to 19 thing though, because 19 divided by 40 is 47.5 percent, which rounds to 48, so that part is fine. The issue is what counts as "lost." If a guy gets a cut on April 3rd and his hair grows slow, he might not be due again until early June, so he never shows up in your April or May numbers. I ran into this same panic last year and then realized like six of my "lost" guys were just on a five or six week cycle. Pull the data again but give it 90 days before you call someone gone. Your real number is probably better than you think.
