Ditched my $60 self-watering planter after one season

Bought one of those self-watering pots with a reservoir last spring for my cherry tomatoes. The roots just sat in water and rotted everything by July. Anybody else had better luck with these things or am I better off sticking with regular pots?

....so you had one bad season and now you're ready to throw the whole concept out the window? Look, I get it's frustrating when plants die but self-watering planters aren't automatically a scam. The issue is usually user error more than the pot itself. Most people just fill the reservoir and forget about it, but you still gotta check the moisture level and let the soil dry out between waterings. Cherry tomatoes especially need drainage and air circulation around the roots, so if you just let them sit in a puddle they're gonna rot every time.
