Can we talk about self-watering planters vs. old-school pots...

My neighbor swore by those self-watering boxes and said they saved her tomato plants during a heatwave, but my basil in regular terracotta pots actually did better. Which side are you on for balcony growing, and what's your experience been?

I actually used to be team old-school pots all the way. My pepper plants started getting root rot in self-watering pots last year and I was sure they were a gimmick. But then my neighbor lent me her self-watering box for some lettuce this spring and I was wrong. The lettuce stayed crisp even when I forgot to water for a few days. Guess it really depends on what you're growing and how much time you have to babysit plants.

Luna, you're lucky this time but self-watering killed my basil in three days.
