Almost lost my whole tomato crop to a single bad choice

I had to pick between a cheap, small pot from a big box store or a pricier, deep fabric one for my balcony tomatoes. I went cheap to save $15, and the roots got so cramped the plants stopped growing after a month. The leaves turned yellow and I only got three sad tomatoes total. Has anyone else had a plant totally fail because the pot was just too small?

My basil did the same thing in a tiny mug, it just gave up on life.

Yeah mugs are death traps for herbs, no drainage holes. Roots rot super fast. You gotta use a pot with holes in the bottom, and way more soil than you think. That tiny mug just can't hold enough water or let it drain.
