Why does nobody warn you about frost heave on shed footings until the door stops closing

I poured a 4 inch slab for my 10x12 shed in Minneapolis two winters ago and thought I was set. Last March the double doors stopped latching, and when I put a level on the floor it showed a 1.5 inch drop from one corner to the other. The ground here freezes down past 4 feet, so my slab was basically floating on a layer of pudding every spring. I pulled the whole thing up, dug 14 sonotube footings down to 48 inches, and it has not moved since. Anybody in a cold climate got a footing depth that actually works for them, or am I overdoing it at 48?
