The feed store guy in Tulsa told me to stop feeding my hens scratch at night and he was right
I thought he was just trying to sell me more layer pellets, but cutting the scratch after 5pm got me 5 eggs a day instead of 2 within a week, and now I'm wondering if anyone else had the same turnaround or if it was just the warmer weather doing the work.
Had a neighbor who swore his hens quit laying because of a stray cat hanging around the coop. Turned out he had a heat lamp running all night in July and they were too hot to lay. Birds are weird about light and temp, so the warm weather might be part of your deal too. Only way to know for sure is run it back this fall when it cools off.
Did the feed store guy say why the timing mattered? A buddy of mine had the same thing happen, he was tossing scratch in the evening thinking it helped them stay warm overnight, and his count dropped off. His wife finally pointed out the birds were filling up on corn right before bed and skipping the real feed at dawn. He moved the scratch to morning and the eggs came back.
