Leave anything decorative at the car, it's just extra weight and a bear attractant. Focus on the ten essentials and forget making things cute. That rug probably smelled like home to that bear, lol.
What about those scented body lotions or deodorants people use without thinking? Seems like half the folks on trail smell like coconut or fresh linen from a mile away. Wonder if bears pick up on those artificial smells as much as food or perfume.
Man, you're totally right about that. Saw a bear rip into a campsite once because someone left out one of those plug-in air fresheners. Thing smelled like fake pine trees and the bear just destroyed their tent trying to get to it. Pretty much cured me of bringing anything with a scent. Some folks just don't get how strong smells are to wildlife. Learned that lesson the hard way without even being my own stuff, lol.
