Can we talk about food resupply on the JMT? I switched from mailed boxes to buying in town and I'm not sure I made the right call
In 2019 I mailed 6 resupply boxes ahead of my John Muir Trail thru-hike, mostly because everyone on the forums said the towns were picked clean and shipping was the only safe way. This past August I did the same trail with zero boxes, just buying as I went in Mammoth, VVR, and MTR, and honestly the food was fresher and I saved about $180 in postage. But I also spent 2 hours in Bishop hunting for a decent tortilla and ended up eating gas station jerky for 3 days straight. Mailed boxes give you control but lock in your pace and your cravings, buying as you go keeps you free but can burn a whole town day. Which way do you all lean and did a bad resupply ever wreck a stretch for you?
Totally feel you @rivershah, that Bishop tortilla hunt was a low point and I nearly gave up and just ate candy bars for dinner. Mailing boxes means you always know what you're getting, which beats wandering three stores hoping for something decent.
