Was flipping through an old Cessna 172 manual from the 70s and saw the original price for a new KX 170B nav/com was $1,850.
Found that in a box of old paperwork from a retired mechanic's hangar sale, and it just blew my mind thinking about what that would be in today's money.

Ever wonder what the maintenance bill was back then?

Man, that old manual price is a gut punch. I bet the maintenance was a fraction of what it is now too, good point theaallen. Everything about flying just feels like it was built for regular people back then, not just the rich. Finding stuff like that makes me miss a time I wasn't even alive for.

Everything about flying just felt like it was built for regular people back then" really nails it, richard_ramirez. The whole cost structure was different (not just the radios) because a 172 was basically a fancy car payment, not something you needed a mortgage for. I'd bet the avionics and engine work back then wasn't cheap either, but at least the plane itself didn't cost more than a house (like it does now).
