Been there. I stripped a whole house full of Romex using a utility knife one time because I didn't own a proper stripper yet. Took me like three hours and my hands were cramping for days. I still find myself messing up the gauge selector on my strippers and having to re-strip the same wire twice. At least you figured it out, I'm still out here guessing half the time.

my buddy josh tried using a leatherman pliers to strip a 12 gauge once and ended up cutting halfway through the copper. spent more time patching it with electrical tape than just going to home depot for the right tool lol.
