Talked to a retired painter at the hardware store and he changed my mind on clear coats

He said he never used a tack rag before spraying. Never. Said it just pushes dust around. I always thought it was a must-do step. He worked at a Chevy dealer in Toledo for 40 years. Now I'm questioning everything I was taught. Anyone else skip the tack rag and get better results?

My uncle was a carpenter for fifty years and swore by wiping surfaces with a damp cheesecloth instead of a tack rag. It feels like half the stuff we're told is mandatory is just one person's method that got passed down as gospel. I see it with cooking recipes, car maintenance, you name it. There's always that one old timer who throws out the rulebook and gets perfect results anyway. Makes you wonder how many steps we do just because we were told to, not because they actually work better.

That "damp cheesecloth" idea would make me worry about raising the grain.
