PSA: Getting my mount's backlash adjusted right took me 5 months and 3 trips to a shop in Tucson
I bought a used equatorial mount off a guy in Tucson last fall and the stars were eggs in every single sub. I figured it was polar alignment or my balance, so I messed with that for about 6 weeks and got nowhere. Turns out the backlash on the declination axis was so bad that guiding was chasing its own tail, and no amount of PhD2 settings was ever going to fix it. I finally drove the mount back to the shop in Tucson in February, and the tech there had it sorted in 40 minutes with a feeler gauge and a hex key. Five months of throwing out frames and I could have fixed it on day one for free. Has anyone else bought used gear and spent way too long blaming themselves instead of the hardware?
