My buddy the mechanic said synthetic oil is a waste unless you drive like a maniac - got me second guessing my whole routine

He told me his 2002 F-150 has run plain dino juice for 220,000 miles with zero engine issues, so am I just throwing money away on premium 5W-30 every 5,000 miles for no real gain?

Your buddy is right that old trucks can run forever on conventional oil, but he's missing that synthetic isn't about preventing catastrophic failure. The real difference shows up in cold starts and high-temp situations. If you live somewhere it gets below freezing, synthetic flows way better when you turn the key, meaning less wear in those first few seconds. Plus synthetic handles higher heat better, so if you tow anything or do stop-and-go traffic, you're actually getting more protection. The main thing is 5,000 mile changes are overkill for synthetic anyway. You could stretch to 7,500 or even 10,000 miles and still be fine, which makes the cost difference pretty small over time.

Not sure I totally agree with the stretch to 10,000 miles though. I mean, I get the logic behind synthetic lasting longer, but in my experience that really depends on how you drive. If you're doing a lot of short trips where the engine never gets fully warmed up, even synthetic can break down faster from moisture and fuel dilution. I've seen too many people follow the "10,000 mile synthetic rule" and end up with sludge because their commute is like 4 miles each way. I'd rather change it at 7,000 and feel safe than push it and risk it. Take this with a grain of salt, but I've seen what happens inside engines with extended intervals in real world conditions.
